The default block type is set in the Advanced page of the Grid Properties dialog box. It can either be a normal block or a clue square, in which case the alternate block type is the other one.
You can also disallow double left-clicks from making bars or blocks in the Grid Properties dialog box. This is sometimes useful as it can be hard work aiming exactly at a narrow line!
